THAT TIME I PAINTED AN ELEPHANT...
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to draw and paint. Though I’ve never had any formal art training, I have managed to keep doing it as a hobby over the years, mostly sticking with pen and ink drawings and pencil sketches. Every now and then, however, the opportunity arises where I am able to use my passion for art as a way to help raise money and awareness for a charitable or environmental cause and I’m always very honored to be asked to participate in such projects. My biggest project to date, and I mean that in the most literal sense of the word, was when I was invited to paint a giant elephant to be part of the iconic Elephant Parade that was coming to Bangkok :)
ซินดี้ชอบวาดรูปตั้งแต่เด็ก ถึงแม้ว่าไม่เคยเรียนศิลปะอย่างจริงจังแต่ก็ยังทำเป็นงานอดิเรกมาโดยตลอด ส่วนใหญ่จะชอบ sketch ด้วยปากกาหรือดินสอ บางทีก็มีคนชวนไปทำงานศิลปะร่วมกับมูลนิธิต่างๆเพื่อเป็นการระดมทุนหรือช่วยในการรณรงค์ ซินดี้รู้สึกเป็นเกียรติและภูมิใจทุกครั้งที่มีได้โอกาสต่อยอดความสุขที่ซินดี้ได้จากการวาดรูปเพื่อเป็นประโยชน์ต่อสังคม หนึ่งในนั้นคือครั้งที่ได้ร่วมเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินที่ถูกรับเชิญไห้เพ้นท์ช้างสำหรับโครงการ Elephant Parade ที่ได้มาเยือนประเทศไทย
I was hesitant at first, knowing what a HUGE commitment it would be, not to mention the challenge of trying to paint a replica of a real life sized baby elephant in my home with two very lively and curious kids hovering around. I had visions of them wanting to “help” Mommy with their crayons and glitter markers. In the end, I agreed, and not too long after, my baby elephant was delivered to our front door. It was a very tight squeeze just to get her through the doorway and into the foyer where she remained for the next 4 months. It took me nearly a month just to decide what to do with her & how to paint her. I was used to small, flat sketchbook pages not a giant 3D acrylic pachyderm!
ก่อนตอบตกลงซินดี้คิดหนักอยู่เหมือนกันเพราะกลัวว่าจะทำไม่ได้ดี บวกกับที่บ้านมีลูกเล็กและซนสองคนที่อาจจะอยากช่วยคุณแม่ในการระบายสี แต่สุดท้ายเราก็ได้ตอบตกลงแล้วก็อีกไม่นานก็มีช้างตัวเท่าลูกช้างจริงส่งมาที่บ้าน เกือบเข้าประตูหน้าบ้านไม่ได้ด้วยซ้ำ ซินดี้ใช้เวลาเกือบหนึ่งเดือนกว่าจะคิดออกว่าอยากทำอะไรกับช้างน้อยตัวนี้
I finally settled for a combination of acrylic paint and my own preferred technique of pen & ink. I chose monotone colors of black, grey and white for the background patchwork effect which was meant to symbolize the borders, both natural and man-made, that elephants must face. I then used bright purple and fuchsia for the free-form flowers to represent the elephants’ amazing resilient spirits that cannot, and should not, be contained within such borders. I finished her off with hand-drawn details that reflect traditional Thai fabric patterns with permanent paint markers in black and silver.
ทั้งหมดทั้งมวลก็ใช้เวลาเกือบสี่เดือนในการเพ้นท์ สุดท้ายแล้วก็ออกมาอย่างที่เห็นในภาพ จะเป็นการผสมผสานระหว่างสี acrylic กับปากกา permanent ลวดลายมีความเป็นไทย ดอกไม้ที่มีสีสันก็เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของสัญชาตญาณของช้าง ที่ทั้งน่ารักสดใสแต่แข็งแกร่งในเวลาเดียวกัน
Lastly, I gave her the name“Serina” from the Thai word ‘Seri” which means freedom. Serina then joined her family in a moving “parade” all over Bangkok before being auctioned off in order to raise funds for elephant welfare and conservation projects.
สุดท้ายก็ตั้งชื่อว่า “Serina” จากคำว่า เสรี ในภาษาไทยนั่นเอง เสร็จแล้ว Serina ก็ได้ไปร่วมเดินขบวนกับครอบครัวช้างของเธอตามสถานที่ต่างๆในกรุงเทพ และหลังจากนั้นก็ได้มีการประมูลเพื่อหารายได้สมทบทุนช่วยมูนิธิช้างในประเทศไทย
